Randburg Destinations & Attractions

In the heart of the Johannesburg Metro is the bustling area of Randburg. This is one of the major business and shopping areas of the city. However, the residential areas boast gorgeous greenery, well-manicured gardens and impressive, large homes. Due to its abundance of residential suburbs, Randburg is well equipped with a number of parks, in which little ones can play safely while under the watchful eye of their parents.

Having been established as a separate town in the 1950’s, Randburg is a fairly recent addition to the municipality of Johannesburg. It boasts almost three dozen individual suburbs; including Cresta, Bordeaux, Fontainebleau, Aldara Park, Randpark Ridge, Fairlands, Honeydew and North Riding.

Randburg is a shopper’s delight. Some of its best known malls include Northgate, Cresta, Randburg Square and Brightwater Commons. These offer an incredible variety of retail outlets, exclusive boutiques, salons, accessory stores, restaurants, coffee shops, kiddies’ specialty stores, and more. Of course, the entertainment value is high, and visitors will have plenty to keep them busy in Randburg.

The Barnyard Theatre, situated in Cresta, is a fun spot in which the family can relax with good food, drinks and friends. The theatrical element ensures fun and entertainment, while the entire vibe is relaxed and a little rustic.

For Randburg visitors that enjoy being outdoors, the Braamfontein Spruit Hiking Trail is a nine kilometre hike (one way) that is easy enough for families with children, or for those that are not particularly fit, albeit fairly long (especially if you have to walk back to the car, making it a total of 18 kilometres). The trail follows the river through huddles of blue gums. Look out for enticing rock pools, as well as plenty of bird species and other wildlife.

The Honeydew Mazes guarantee a day of entertainment for every age group in the family. The fun includes a massive bamboo maze, general knowledge quizzes, smaller mazes, five secret gardens, and puzzles that will keep young minds occupied.

The wildlife of Africa never ceases to impress, and Randburg’s Lion Park showcases these to perfection. There are white lions, as well as cubs; in addition to cheetahs, giraffes, hyenas and antelope. There are also fantastic opportunities to interact with several of the animals, including the lion cubs. It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play with these fascinating hunters, and visitors love taking home a formal photograph of their encounters. The children’s playground means that parents can relax while little ones are amply entertained. There is also a braai and picnic area for families and friends that want to enjoy the peace and beauty around them while spending some relaxing time together.
